Peter Thiel to Fund Floating Islands Society

You may or may not be familiar with Peter Thiel. He is the founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook. Now Peter is moving away from the world wide web and trying his hand in real estate. Thiel has donated $1.25 million to create the floating libertarian countries.

Basically Thiel wants to build a small island that will float freely in the ocean that is not subject to any of the current laws and regulations. The initial plans include a 12,000 ton movable, diesel-powered structure that could house approximately 270 residents. By 2050, seasteading chief Petri Friedman hopes to have hundreds of these platforms banded together in the ocean able to house tens of millions of residents.

The idea is pretty unique.  Thiel has long been a believer of the Libertarian way of life but I am not sure how this idea is going to pan out. For now we are just going to have to wait and see.
