Sometimes you see a product and just have to ask, why? Elon Musk has created a couple such products, most notably the flamethrower. But now, for some reason, Tesla is producing and selling surfboards. That’s not some fancy tech word for something new but an actual surfboard to ride ocean waves.
The surfboards, which are set to ship in the next couple weeks, are meant to be an accessory for the Tesla vehicles, and the automaker promises the boards will fit nicely within the Model X, S, and even the smaller Model 3.
Production of the custom boards, which will be limited to a run of 200, was designed in-house by Tesla Engineers.
“Designed by the Tesla Design Studio in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, surfboard shaper for World Surf League Championship athletes. The Limited Edition Tesla Surfboard features a mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finishes used on all our cars. The deck is reinforced with light-weight “Black Dart” carbon fiber, inspired by the interiors in our cars, and featuring tonal logos in subtle contrast gloss.”
This is not the first time Tesla has made accessories for their vehicles; their most notable accessory is a pretty bad-ass leather jacket, which looks amazing on both men and women.
So, will Tesla have any luck selling surfboards? They’re already gone. The initial lot of 200 sold out within a couple hours of the announcement. This leads one to wonder if the surfboards will become a standard part of the accessory line.
