Technology and social media in the 2008 presidential elections

Did someone say there is an official Obama iPhone application? Wait, what? There really is one? No kidding, you can download the official iPhone application at barackobama.com/iphone. This iPhone application has to be one of the best advancements I’ve seen when it comes to elections (for those who have an iPhone at least). With this application it is possible for anyone to volunteer because it provides features like: call friends, stats, news, local events and media coverage.

With blogs anyone, anywhere can share their own opinion about the election. Blogging did great and wonderful things for both campaigns because voters could share their thoughts, opinions and debates with the rest of the world.

Social media has come a great way and is now being incorporated into live news broadcasts. All of the major news teams like CNN, MSNBC and Fox were reading Twitter updates and showing YouTube videos live on their show. election.twitter.com has immediate ongoing coverage of the election from all Twitter users.

This campaign will go down in history as the first where the internet played a central role in forming and shaping the race. From Twitter to YouTube, social media has changed the nature of political campaigns forever and has played a key role in getting young and new voters to the polls. If nothing else, social media has made information more available and quickly accessible to a wider audience.
