Fayetteville, NC – Tonia Powers filed for an order of protection against her boyfriend Todd Landford on November 10, 2008. However, she never showed up to court to make the protection order permanent. Four days later, she and Landford were arrested on suspicion of child abuse. Now, if it wasn’t for the fact that Tonia did file for a protection order, you might suspect that she was just afraid to be alone.
An anonymous call alerted police to the possible abuse when Powers’ son missed a week of school. When police investigated, they found the boy with more than 33 bruises all over his body, and a 3 to 4 inch cut on his genitals. As if that wasn’t enough, Landford is suspected of picking the boy up by his throat and choking him until he passed out, throwing him into the coffee table and stomping on his kidney, leaving a shoe print shaped bruise on his back.
Powers has been charged with aiding and abetting, and being an accessory after the fact. Her bond was set at $25,000. Landford has been charged with assault on a child under 12, malicious maiming, felony child abuse inflicting serious injury, assault by strangulation and communication of a threat. His bond was set at $35,000.
