Some interesting news from CES

The above monitor is the one monitor I could see wanting over my Cinema Display.   Imagine playing WoW or Counter Strike on this thing.   It’s from Alienware and it looks awesome. Blu-Ray is about to win the war

This news is not exactly from CES, but I’m sure is leading to a lot of buzz there.   It looks like Paramount is following Warner Bros. out of the HD DVD house.   This will leave only Universal and Dreamworks as the two studios supporting the Toshiba backed technology.I had my money on Blu-Ray from the beginning for several reasons.   First off, Sony is a smart company who learns from their mistakes.   During the Betamax vs. VHS wars, Sony lost because of the lack of studio support.   This time around, they had their own studios to start with.   Second, they did a great job trojan horsing Blu-Ray into the living room through the PS3.   I have to believe that most people interested in the next gen DVD would also be PS3 owners.   And third, I was positive they would win when they landed Disney.   RIP HD DVD.   If it makes you guys at Toshiba feel better, I think it’s all a waste of time since 2008 is going to be the year of online movie rentals.   Speaking of which….

Creative Labs XDock HD

Creative Labs XDock HD
It looks like Creative labs is going to release this thing in Spring 2008, which will retail for $400.   The XDock HD will upconvert video from your iPod to 720p or 1080i, which would be a much needed improvement.

Now I’m curious how well this will look, but obviously this could be coming at a very opportune time with the expected announcement from Apple on movie rentals through iTunes.   Imagine being able to rent movies through iTunes, and being able to watch them in HD!   That would be a great addition to the portability factor of iTunes movie rentals.   Speaking of portability of movie rentals….

Sony Blu-Ray from PS3 to PSP

PS3 to PSP Blu-Ray
We have already covered the fact the PS3 is the big winner in the format wars, but here is something for Sony to dane on the grave with.   It looks like Sony officially announced that people who have a Blu-Ray disk in their PS3 will be able to transfer their movie directly to a PSP.   That is something I like the idea of very much.
