My Mac Dream Team

Apple plans on unveiling their new laptop line up next Tuesday, which is great news.   Us member of the Mac cult have been anxious to get our MacBook fix.   But I’m not sure Apple will be giving me what I really want.

After working off a laptop exclusively for so long, it’s hard for me to imagine not doing so.   But with the release of the MacBook Air, and all the releases of netbooks from Dell and EeePC, I’m really interested in lightening the load in my bag with an ultra-light laptop.   But I’m also going to need some heavier power when it comes to the occasional job.

So for me the perfect solution would be an ultra-light laptop, and a super powerful desktop machine.   But Apple isn’t really giving me what I need here.

The MacBook Air is small and light, very sexy design, and has enough power to do what I would need on the road.   But at $1,800 it’s insanely over priced when compared to models from Dell.   I’m more than willing to pay a premium for OS X and Apple quality, but that premium is really about 50% more, not nearly 400%.

I would also like to see a bit more power, maybe bump the processing up to 2.25 GHz, and increase the SSD to 120 gigs.   Also, make the battery life last at least 6 hours, which shouldn’t be too difficult with a SSD.

A Macbook Air for under $1,000 would be something I would snap up immediately.   Well as long as I had the second piece of the puzzle.

The second piece of the puzzle of course is the desktop.   Apple does have a great desktop in the iMac.   It too is compact, sexy and offers enough power to do anything I’m likely to need to do myself.   But I would really love to see one more option.

I’m currently plugging my MacBook Pro into an older, original model 23” Cinema Display.   It’s over 5 years old, so I’m thinking an upgrade may soon be in order.   But I would really love to go to the 30”.   This brings me back to the desktop machine I would like to see.   I would really like to see Apple release a 30” iMac with a lot of power, and at least 1TB of HD space.   I understand that wouldn’t be cheap, so I would be willing to go $2,500 for the desktop.

So to recap, I would love to pay Apple $3,500 for a 30” iMac and a MacBook Air.   Hopefully these ideas are not too far off the mark and I can be traveling light while away, and have plenty of room to play when I”m home.

  1. Totally agree with both points, but I don’t think they will happen. It will be the standard MacBook that goes under $1,000. The Air will still be expensive.

Also, a 30″ iMac would easily go for $3,500 itself.
