Crime is not something we want to think about during the holiday season but unfortunately not everyone gets in the holiday spirit. Linda Mason had to think about crime this Christmas when her house was robbed. The thief had stolen her food, bedding, Christmas decorations and even the actual Christmas tree! While the Dr. Seuss tale of the Grinch may come to mind, the one who tried to steal Linda Mason’s Christmas was a bit closer to home.
To compound the already Grinch-like nature of this crime, the robbery took place while Mason was lying in a hospital bed in Chapel Hill undergoing treatment for cancer. As if this wasn’t bad enough, the person responsible for the theft turned out to be Mason’s own 35-year old daughter, Heather Mason Calderon.
Calderon was arrested and charged with felony breaking and entering and committing larceny in Erwin, NC. After her arrest, Calderon was found to have an outstanding warrant for previous breaking and entering charges. She was being held in the Harnett County Jail until such a time as she can post a $12,000 bond. In “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” there was a happy ending but I don’t think there is any way to achieve that in this story.
