Synjan Mitchell was arrested on charges of underage drinking and child abuse. Mitchell, 18, was babysitting two young children, aged 5 months and 21 months, in Mesa, Phoenix, when the mother of the children returned home at about 11 p.m. to find the door to her apartment open, with empty beer cans strewn on the floor and loud music playing. Mitchell was not in the apartment, but returned several minutes later and engaged in an altercation with the mother, who is the girlfriend of Mitchell’s brother. Mitchell is accused of slapping the mother in the face during the dispute, though she claims that the mother attacked her. She also claims she brought the children, a boy and a girl, with her when she left the apartment, though she admits she had been drinking.
According to the police, a neighbor said he saw Mitchell leave the apartment about a half hour before the mother returned home. He stated that Mitchell told him the children were in bed, and that she was just going to get some cigarettes. When Mitchell returned to the apartment, she appeared to be drunk. Mitchell is now being held on charges of underage consumption of alcohol and child abuse.
