The coatimundi or coati is a member of the raccoon family that is native to many parts of North America. A coatimundi is usually found in in mountain canyons with large oak and sycamore trees. They are known to be very affectionate and smart. The coati is said to make an excellent pet.
The average coati is around two feet long with dark colored brownish fur. Coatis have a very long tail that can sometimes be as long as their body. Adult coatis range from 13 to 27 inches in length. At full-size they usually weigh about 8 to 18 pounds with males usually bigger than females and sometimes double the size. Coatis are generally the size of a large housecat. Just like the raccoon, coati have deep black facial masks.
Coatis usually make better pets than raccoons because they don’t typically go wild as raccoons do. These animals are very curious and will get into anything and everything. A coati can quickly get out of hand if not given some sort of stimulation and energetic outlet. A coatimundi should have lots of activities, toys and attention to keep them from getting bored.
The coati is naturally an omnivore. In the wild they may eat small rodents, lizards and birds as well as fruit and vegetables. They can eat pet food but it is best if the food contains both plant and animal. Try using fresh fruit and eggs. Treats can include gummy bears, marshmallows and fruit loops. If left outdoors, a coati will likely forage for insects or small animals. Hamsters, birds and reptiles probably shouldn’t be kept around coatis because they may be eaten if they are caught.
A coati can be kept in an indoor or outdoor cage but the cage should be very large. Coati are not tolerate of extreme cold or heat so plan accordingly.
The Coati does not discrete body odor and can learn to use a cat litter box but it will likely need to be cleaned often due to the smell of this breeds fecies.
It is always important to make sure that you are legally allowed to keep an exotic pet such as a coatimundi in your state of residence. Contact local law enforcement agencies as well as animal control to find out the restrictions and current laws. Because they are considered an exotic pet it may be more difficult to find a veterinarian make sure you find one that is willing to treat your new pet before you purchase one. Coatis need annual canine and feline vaccinations.
