Essex, VT — Any parent of a young child would agree, daycare is expensive. So when Taryn O’Connor advertised her babysitting services on Craigslist, the young couple that answered her advertisement must have thought they were lucky to find someone who could watch their 13 month old son. Unfortunately, for this young couple, they should have asked for references. If they had asked for references, they would hopefully have found out that Taryn was not supposed to be around children unsupervised. The 22 year-old Taryn was on probation for a previous conviction for domestic assault. According to some reports, she wasn’t even allowed unsupervised visits with her own children.
Taryn watched the child with no apparent issues for several months. However, on November 6, 2008, she got stressed with her own children crying. Instead of taking a break, she slammed the baby’s head into the changing table and shook him. When she finished shaking him, she didn’t call the cops, an ambulance or even his parents. Instead, she left him a crib until the parents came to pick him up.
Taryn was booked into Chittenden County Jail on a $200,000 bond. The 13 month ended up in critical condition in Fanny Allen Memorial Hospital. Taryn’s kids went into DCF Custody where they are looking into why she had her own kids with her unsupervised.
