A mother from Hazelton, PA was arrested December 17 when she brought her three-year old toddler into the local emergency room with a severe burn to her bottom. 21-year old Mary Deoleo claimed that she was preparing little Brianna for a shower on Sunday, three days earlier, when the little girl had tripped and fallen against a space heater. Her story didn’t hold up to what the doctors were saying, however.
The doctors said that the second degree burn was at least five days old and she was transferred to another hospital with a burn unit for further treatment. When the police questioned Deoleo, she admitted that the burn was actually from December 12 and this time claimed it came from the child falling asleep against the space heater. They asked her why she hadn’t sought medical attention for the toddler before and she offered three different explanations.
Not only did Deoleo not seek help for Brianna for five days, she told the doctors that she had only given the child a pain reliever one time during the five days since the burn occurred. During the investigation, police found several people had been in Deoleo’s home but she had not told any of them of the little girl’s injury. Mary Deoleo was arrested and arraigned for felony child endangerment.
