Kristin Cruz, from Gainesville, Florida, was caught on Monday night at 10:45 p.m. when police officers watched her hit another driver from the rear. After the accident, she sped away, causing a police chase to ensue. When she was caught just a few blocks away, Cruz admitted to drinking before getting behind the wheel of her vehicle.
Cruz then became irate, screaming and crying to officers. She would not take a breathalyzer and refused to do any type of sobriety test. Officers asked her to sit still and try to calm down, but instead she kicked a policeman in the leg. While officers tried to deal with the inebriated Cruz, they realized that she had not been alone. Her 7-year old daughter was in the backseat.
The young girl told police officers that her mother had left her in the vehicle alone for a very long time. Officers concluded that the young child had been left in the car while her mother was drinking in the bar. Cruz was also found to have marijuana on her after her arrest.
Cruz is being charged with many counts, including driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident that involved an injury, possession of marijuana, child abuse, refusal to sign a citation, and refusal to take a DUI test. Records also show that Cruz’s license had been suspended in April of 2007.
